After the completion of two months of the special campaign launched by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to root out drugs, the Punjab Police has arrested 4223 drug smugglers including 562 big fish since 5 July 2022. Police registered a total of 3236 FIRs. registered, of which 328 are commercial volume cases.
Addressing his weekly press conference here, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Headquarters Sukhchain Singh Gill said on Tuesday that the police teams from across the state have blocked 175 drug-affected areas and conducted search operations. A kilo of heroin has been recovered. Additionally, Punjab Police teams recovered 147.5 kg of heroin from sea ports in Gujarat and Maharashtra, taking the total effective recovery of heroin to 322.5 kg in just two months.
IGP He said that apart from recovering a huge consignment of heroin, the police also recovered 167 kg of opium, 145 kg of ganja, 222 quintal of poppy and 16.90 lakh medical drugs including tablets/capsules/injections/vials from across the state. The police have also recovered drug money worth Rs 2.73 crore from the arrested drug traffickers in these two months.
Last week, the police registered 326 FIRs, of which 42 related to commercial quantities, arrested 418 drug traffickers and seized 48 kg of heroin, 24 kg of opium, 21 kg of ganja, 9 quintals of poppy and 85374 pills/capsules. Apart from the recovery of capsule drugs, drug money worth Rs. 13.78 lakh has also been recovered.
He said that under the special campaign to arrest the fugitives, NDPS this week. 16 more absconders were arrested in the cases, taking the total number of arrests to 263. It is worth mentioning that the Chief Minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Mann, has given full latitude to the Punjab Police to wage a war against drugs, and extensive anti-drug campaigns have been launched to root out the leprosy of drugs from the border state of Punjab.
