The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Delhi government to pay Rs 900 crore as environmental compensation for mismanagement of municipal solid waste.

The bench also had Justice Sudhir Aggarwal and expert members A Senthil Vail and Afroz Ahmed. The bench said the scene paints a grim picture of the environmental crisis in the national capital.
“Citizens cannot be forced to face emergency due to lack of governance,” the bench said. Methane and other noxious gases are continuously being released and groundwater is being polluted. Along with this, despite repeated incidents of fire, minor safety measures have not been adopted.
The NGT said that there are piles of garbage on expensive public lands. It has 152 acres of land and is worth more than Rs 10,000 crore at the circle rate. There have been gross violations of citizens’ rights and the authorities concerned have failed to take measures to protect the environment and public health.
